The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the primary agency of the United States government responsible for biomedical and public health research. It was founded in the late 1880s and is now part of the United States Department of Health and Human Services.

The United States government is also a constitutional government. It operates according to a set of laws and principles that are outlined in a constitution. And, it is an example of the federal system of government. This means that the national government shares responsibilities with the state and municipal governments. The purpose of our Federal Government, as found in the Preamble of the Constitution, is to "establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our posterity."
