- Provide interpretation services for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in various settings, including classrooms, meetings, events, and other university activities.
- Facilitate communication between deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals and their peers, colleagues, and instructors, ensuring equal access and opportunities for all individuals.
- Maintain a high level of professionalism and confidentiality at all times, adhering to the ethical standards and guidelines set forth by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).
- Adapt to different communication styles and preferences of deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals, utilizing a variety of sign language techniques and strategies.
- Collaborate with other interpreters, faculty, and staff to ensure accurate and effective communication in all university activities and events.
- Keep up-to-date with the latest developments and advancements in the field of sign language interpretation, continuously improving skills and knowledge.
- Provide cultural and linguistic mediation between deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals and hearing individuals, promoting understanding and inclusivity.
- Attend regular trainings and workshops to enhance professional development and maintain certification and licensure requirements.
- Communicate and coordinate with the Disability Support Services (DSS) team to ensure accommodations and services are provided in a timely and appropriate manner.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation of interpreted sessions, adhering to university and national standards and guidelines.
- Assist in the recruitment and training of new interpreters, providing mentorship and support to ensure high-quality services are maintained.
- Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment for all individuals, promoting the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion within the university community.
Fluency In American Sign Language (Asl): As A Sign Language Interpreter At California State University San Marcos, It Is Essential To Have A High Level Of Proficiency In Asl. This Includes Not Only The Ability To Interpret Accurately, But Also To Understand And Convey The Nuances Of The Language.
Certification: A Qualified Candidate For The Sign Language Interpreter Job Should Possess A Certification From A Recognized Interpreting Program, Such As The Registry Of Interpreters For The Deaf (Rid). This Ensures That The Interpreter Has Met The Professional Standards And Ethical Guidelines Set By The Organization.
Knowledge Of Deaf Culture: The Ideal Candidate Should Have A Deep Understanding Of Deaf Culture And Be Able To Navigate The Unique Communication And Social Norms Of The Deaf Community. This Includes Being Aware Of Different Signing Styles, Regional Variations, And Cultural Sensitivities.
Interpreting Experience: Previous Experience Working As A Sign Language Interpreter, Preferably In An Educational Or Academic Setting, Is Highly Desirable. This Demonstrates The Ability To Handle A Variety Of Interpreting Situations And Adapt To Different Environments.
