Job Description

Welcome to the City of Sunnyvale's Recreation Department! We are currently seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Lifeguard/Swim Instructor. In this role, you will have the opportunity to not only ensure the safety of our community members while they enjoy our recreational facilities, but also share your passion for swimming by teaching others this valuable life skill. If you have a strong background in lifeguarding and swim instruction, and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, we encourage you to apply.   1. Ensure the safety of all community members using our recreational facilities as a lifeguard.
  2. Teach swimming lessons to individuals of all ages and skill levels.
  3. Maintain a safe and clean environment in and around the pool area.
  4. Enforce all rules and regulations to ensure the safety of pool patrons.
  5. Respond quickly and effectively to any emergency situations.
  6. Communicate effectively with pool patrons and coworkers.
  7. Provide excellent customer service to all individuals utilizing the recreational facilities.
  8. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of lifeguarding techniques and safety protocols.
  9. Assist with the planning and execution of special events and programs.
  10. Work collaboratively with other lifeguards and swim instructors to ensure smooth operations.
  11. Keep accurate records of pool usage, incidents, and maintenance.
  12. Continuously monitor and evaluate pool conditions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
  13. Attend and participate in training sessions and staff meetings.
  14. Help promote the City of Sunnyvale's Recreation Department and its programs.
  15. Represent the Recreation Department in a positive and professional manner at all times.

Job Qualifications

  • Current Lifeguard/Cpr/Aed/First Aid Certifications: The Ideal Candidate For This Position Should Possess Current Certifications In Lifeguarding, Cpr, Aed, And First Aid From A Reputable Organization Such As The American Red Cross Or The Ymca.

  • Experience In Lifesaving And Swim Instruction: The City Of Sunnyvale Is Looking For Candidates Who Have Previous Experience In Both Lifesaving And Swim Instruction. This Includes Experience In Pool Supervision, Enforcing Safety Rules, And Teaching Swim Lessons To A Diverse Range Of Individuals.

  • Excellent Communication Skills: Effective Communication Is Essential For A Successful Lifeguard/Swim Instructor. Candidates Should Possess Excellent Verbal And Written Communication Skills To Effectively Communicate With Swimmers, Parents, And Other Staff Members.

  • Physical Fitness And Strong Swimming Skills: As A Lifeguard/Swim Instructor, You Will Be Required To Pass A Physical Fitness Test And Demonstrate Strong Swimming Skills. Candidates Should Be In Good Physical Condition And Have The Ability To Swim Long Distances And Perform Rescues If Needed.

  • Knowledge Of Safety And Emergency Procedures: Lifeguard/Swim Instructors Are Responsible For Ensuring The Safety Of All Swimmers In The Pool. Candidates Should Have A Thorough Understanding Of Safety And Emergency Procedures, Including How To Respond To Water Emergencies And Perform First Aid When Necessary.
