As a Virtual Events Assistant for AllAboutLaw, I coordinated events with law firms and schools by managing logistics and resolving technical issues during live webinars. This enhanced my organisational skills, balancing these duties with university work, and improved my adaptability through live problem-solving. The experience also provided valuable insights into the legal industry and strengthened my communication skills.

Virtual Events Assistant

At the AS Aspire VDLF, I spoke to eight firms, with each session highlighting key aspects of the firm. I learned about Cooley LLP’s collaborative and inclusive culture, Morrison & Foerster’s global teamwork and diversity initiatives, and Pinsent Masons’ emphasis on transferrable skills. The interactions with Travers Smith and Macfarlanes demonstrated the benefits of smaller trainee intakes, providing greater exposure to high-profile matters and increased risk and responsibility during the training contract.

AS Aspire VDLF Insight

Through the Q&A session with a panel of trainees, associates, graduate recruitment, and partners, I learned about Jones Day’s non-rotational training contract. This structure allows trainees to work across multiple departments simultaneously, gaining broad experience and managing their workload. I also learned that there is significant emphasis on international collaboration, with the Madrid and London offices frequently working together.

Open Evening

I worked as a telephone fundraiser with Buffalo Fundraising Consultants for two weeks. I helped raise £9,000 personally, contributing to the team’s £135,000, surpassing our £130,000 target for Merchant Taylors’ Bursary Fund. During this time, I encountered a donor who, due to ill health, could not contribute and instead sought help in finding a job at the school. Untrained for this scenario, I consulted my supervisor to ensure I provided accurate information through a follow-up email. Here, I developed my verbal communication skills and my ability to handle unexpected scenarios.

Fundraising Consultant

I completed a two-week work experience at Jung & Co Solicitors in Criminal and Wills & Probate law. 
I assisted in a Class B Drug Possession matter, which became complex as the client was a victim of modern slavery. I was tasked with drafting a briefing note to Counsel, which developed my written communication and attention to detail. My supervisor was satisfied with sending my draft without any further changes.  
In Probate Law, I drafted an IHT 423 form to release funds from a deceased individual’s bank account. Due to the client relocating abroad, the funds were urgently needed, which increased time pressure as I was working simultaneously on the criminal matter above. Completing this improved my time management and organisation skills, better preparing me for managing deadlines and competing priorities.

Legal Intern

At the Discovering Linklaters Open Day, I met with trainees, associates, and partners in Banking, Antitrust/Competition, and Litigation, Arbitration and Investigation (LAI). The nature of the work in a City-based training contract appealed to me the most, especially the distinct exposure to high-profile clients. As someone motivated by seeing the impact of their work, the presence of high-profile clients ensures that the stakes remain high and that the work I contribute to will have a tangible impact in the real world.

Discovering Linklaters Insight Day

I participated in a two-week work experience at Skylark Hill Solicitors, where I gained insight into Family Law. Here, I drafted a C100 form for both a Prohibited Steps order and a Child Arrangements order. Both tasks had to be completed under time pressure given the impending court case, while I also took minutes during a client call. As a result, I developed strong attention to detail, time management and organisation skills by submitting the form ahead of the deadline, allowing the matter to proceed without delay.
