Job Description

Are you passionate about using recreational activities to promote positive change and rehabilitation? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as a Recreation Therapist at High Desert State Prison, part of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. As a key member of our interdisciplinary team, you will play a vital role in providing therapeutic recreation services to incarcerated individuals. We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate individual with a strong background in recreation therapy and experience working in a correctional facility. Join us in making a difference in the lives of those in our care and contribute to the overall mission of public safety and rehabilitation.

  1. Plan and facilitate therapeutic recreational activities for incarcerated individuals at High Desert State Prison.
  2. Collaborate with other members of the interdisciplinary team to develop individualized treatment plans for each patient.
  3. Conduct initial assessments and ongoing evaluations to determine the recreational needs and progress of each patient.
  4. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of patient progress and participation in recreational activities.
  5. Ensure the safety and well-being of patients during all recreational activities.
  6. Utilize evidence-based practices and therapeutic techniques to promote positive change and rehabilitation in patients.
  7. Develop and maintain relationships with community organizations and resources to support the recreational needs of patients.
  8. Attend and actively participate in team and departmental meetings to discuss patient progress and treatment plans.
  9. Provide education and training to other staff members on the benefits and techniques of recreation therapy.
  10. Stay current on industry trends and research in recreation therapy to continuously improve and enhance services provided.
  11. Adhere to all policies and procedures of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
  12. Maintain a compassionate and non-judgmental approach towards incarcerated individuals.
  13. Foster a positive and therapeutic environment for patients to engage in recreational activities.
  14. Communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, and supervisors to ensure efficient and effective delivery of services.
  15. Uphold the mission of public safety and rehabilitation through the delivery of high-quality recreation therapy services.

Job Qualifications
  • Certification As A Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (Ctrs) From The National Council For Therapeutic Recreation Certification (Nctrc).

  • Bachelor's Degree In Recreation Therapy Or Related Field From An Accredited University.

  • Minimum Of 2 Years Experience Working In A Correctional Facility Or With Criminal Justice Populations.

  • Knowledge And Understanding Of Evidence-Based Recreational Therapy Interventions And Techniques For Addressing Mental Health, Substance Abuse, And Behavioral Issues.

  • Strong Communication And Interpersonal Skills, As Well As The Ability To Work Effectively With Diverse Populations In A Correctional Setting.
