
Adult Corrections Officer

- Maintain the safety and security of inmates and staff within the state's correctional facilities.
- Ensure that all rules and regulations are followed by inmates and report any violations to superiors.
- Conduct regular rounds and inspections of the facility to identify and address any potential security risks.
- Monitor and control inmate movement within the facility, including during meals, recreation time, and visitation.
- Maintain accurate records of inmate activities, behavior, and any incidents that occur.
- Respond quickly and appropriately to emergencies and disturbances within the facility.
- Administer and document inmate searches and contraband control measures.
- Conduct intake and classification procedures for new inmates, including assessing potential risks and needs.
- Provide support and guidance to inmates, including counseling and referral to appropriate resources.
- Collaborate with other staff members, such as medical and mental health professionals, to ensure the well-being of inmates.
- Maintain professional and respectful relationships with inmates, colleagues, and the public.
- Attend and participate in trainings, meetings, and other professional development opportunities.
- Uphold the values and mission of the Department of Public Safety and the State of Hawaii.
- Adhere to all departmental policies, procedures, and standards.
- Continuously strive to improve the safety and effectiveness of the correctional facility and its operations.
Minimum Education And Training Requirements: A High School Diploma Or Equivalent Is Required For This Role, And Applicants Must Also Complete A State-Approved Corrections Officer Training Program.
Physical And Mental Fitness: The Job Of A Corrections Officer Is Physically And Mentally Demanding, And Applicants Must Be Able To Pass A Physical Fitness Test And Mental Health Evaluation To Ensure They Are Able To Perform The Duties Of The Job.
Background Check And Drug Testing: Candidates For This Position Will Undergo A Thorough Background Check And Drug Testing To Ensure They Have No Criminal Record Or History Of Substance Abuse.
Communication And Interpersonal Skills: A Successful Corrections Officer Must Have Excellent Communication And Interpersonal Skills To Effectively Interact With Inmates, Fellow Officers, And Other Staff Members In A Professional And Respectful Manner.
Knowledge Of Correctional Policies And Procedures: A Good Understanding Of State And Federal Laws, As Well As Correctional Policies And Procedures, Is Essential For A Corrections Officer To Maintain A Safe And Secure Environment For Inmates And Staff.
