Job Description

Our state-of-the-art zoos are home to a diverse array of fascinating creatures, and we are seeking a skilled veterinarian to join our team and provide top-notch medical care for our animal residents. As a Zoo Veterinarian, you will play a vital role in ensuring the health and well-being of these unique animals, while also educating the public on conservation efforts.   1. Provide expert medical care for exotic animals at state zoos, including performing routine check-ups, diagnosing and treating illnesses and injuries, and performing surgical procedures.
  2. Collaborate with zookeepers and other animal care staff to monitor and maintain the health of animals and identify any potential health concerns.
  3. Develop and implement preventative health programs for zoo animals, including vaccination protocols and disease prevention measures.
  4. Maintain accurate and detailed medical records for all animals under your care.
  5. Stay up-to-date on current veterinary practices and research related to zoo animal health and welfare.
  6. Educate and train zoo staff on proper animal handling techniques and basic medical procedures.
  7. Communicate with zoo management and other departments to ensure proper care and management of animals.
  8. Participate in and provide support for conservation efforts and research projects related to zoo animals.
  9. Work closely with other veterinarians and specialists to provide the best possible care for zoo animals, including consulting on difficult cases.
  10. Adhere to all safety protocols and maintain a safe working environment for yourself and others.
  11. Serve as a spokesperson and advocate for the zoo and its animals, promoting conservation efforts and educating the public on the importance of protecting exotic species.
  12. Maintain a positive and professional demeanor when interacting with zoo visitors and members of the public.
  13. Attend and participate in relevant conferences, workshops, and training opportunities to stay informed on current trends and advancements in zoo animal medicine.
  14. Take on additional responsibilities and tasks as assigned by zoo management.

Job Qualifications
  • Doctor Of Veterinary Medicine (Dvm) Degree From An Accredited Veterinary School.

  • Current License To Practice Veterinary Medicine In The State Of Hawaii.

  • Minimum Of 3 Years Experience In A Clinical Or Zoo Setting, Preferably With Exotic Animals.

  • Strong Knowledge Of Exotic Animal Medicine, Including Anatomy, Physiology, And Behavior.

  • Excellent Communication And Interpersonal Skills, With The Ability To Work Collaboratively With Zoo Staff And Other Veterinarians.
