- Conduct thorough and timely autopsies to determine the cause and manner of death in cases under the jurisdiction of the State Medical Examiner's Office.
- Coordinate and collaborate with law enforcement agencies, coroners, and other medical professionals to gather and analyze evidence and information related to death investigations.
- Provide expert testimony in court proceedings related to death investigations.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of all autopsies and death investigations.
- Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to death investigations.
- Train and supervise staff, including other medical examiners and assistants, in proper autopsy and investigation techniques.
- Stay updated on current trends, advancements, and best practices in forensic pathology.
- Communicate effectively with families and loved ones of the deceased, providing them with information and support during the investigation process.
- Participate in community outreach and education programs to promote public awareness and understanding of the role of the State Medical Examiner's Office.
- Collaborate with other agencies and organizations to improve public health and safety initiatives.
- Maintain a high level of professionalism and ethical standards in all aspects of the job.
- Adhere to all state and federal laws and regulations related to death investigations and the handling of human remains.
- Represent the State Medical Examiner's Office at conferences, workshops, and other professional events.
- Assist in the management and maintenance of the office, including equipment, supplies, and budget.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Medical Examiner.
Medical Degree: A Deputy State Medical Examiner Must Possess A Medical Degree From An Accredited Institution, Such As An Md Or Do, And Be Licensed To Practice Medicine In The State Of Oregon.
Forensic Pathology Fellowship: A Minimum Of One Year Of Post-Graduate Training In Forensic Pathology Is Required For This Position. This Fellowship Should Be Accredited By The Accreditation Council For Graduate Medical Education (Acgme) Or Equivalent.
Board Certification: Candidates Must Be Board Certified In Anatomic And Clinical Pathology Or Forensic Pathology By The American Board Of Pathology (Abp) Or The American Osteopathic Board Of Pathology (Aobp).
Experience: A Minimum Of Three Years Of Experience Working As A Forensic Pathologist Is Required For This Role. This Experience Should Include Conducting Autopsies, Analyzing Forensic Evidence, And Testifying In Court As An Expert Witness.
Communication And Teamwork Skills: As Part Of A Larger Team Of Medical Examiners And Law Enforcement Professionals, A Deputy State Medical Examiner Must Have Excellent Communication And Teamwork Skills. This Includes The Ability To Work Collaboratively, Communicate Effectively With Colleagues And Stakeholders, And Maintain Professionalism In High Pressure Situations.
