- Develop and implement a comprehensive collections management plan, including acquisition, cataloging, storage, and preservation strategies.
- Oversee the curation and display of visual and folk art collections, ensuring high-quality exhibitions that reflect the diversity and richness of Utah's cultural heritage.
- Collaborate with other departments and external partners to develop and implement educational programs and public events related to the collections.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation of all collections, including provenance, condition reports, and conservation efforts.
- Conduct research and contribute to the scholarship of visual and folk arts in Utah, sharing findings through publications, presentations, and other platforms.
- Develop and manage budgets for collections-related activities, including conservation, exhibitions, and acquisitions.
- Supervise a team of collections staff, including curators, conservators, and technicians, ensuring a cohesive and collaborative work environment.
- Stay current on industry standards and best practices for collections management and conservation, implementing new techniques and technologies as appropriate.
- Collaborate with fundraising and development teams to secure grants and donations to support collections initiatives.
- Represent the State of Utah and its collections at conferences, workshops, and other professional events, promoting the organization's mission and vision.
Strong Knowledge Of Collections Management: The Director Of Collections, Visual & Folk Arts Should Have A Deep Understanding Of Best Practices And Procedures For Acquiring, Cataloging, Preserving, And Exhibiting Collections. This Includes Experience With Digital Preservation And Knowledge Of Relevant Laws And Regulations.
Excellent Leadership Skills: As The Head Of The Department, The Director Of Collections, Visual & Folk Arts Should Have Strong Leadership Abilities, Including The Ability To Motivate And Manage A Team Of Staff And Volunteers. They Should Also Possess Excellent Communication And Interpersonal Skills To Collaborate With Other Departments And Stakeholders.
Extensive Experience In Art And Folk Art: The Ideal Candidate For This Role Should Have A Background In Art And Folk Art, With A Strong Understanding Of Artistic Movements, Styles, And Techniques. They Should Also Have Experience In Curating And Exhibiting Collections, As Well As A Passion For Preserving Cultural Heritage.
Budget Management Skills: The Director Of Collections, Visual & Folk Arts Will Be Responsible For Managing The Department's Budget, Including Allocating Funds For Acquisitions, Exhibitions, And Conservation. Therefore, The Candidate Should Have Experience In Budget Planning And Financial Management.
Master's Degree In Museum Studies Or Related Field: To Be Considered For This Role, Candidates Should Have A Master's Degree In Museum Studies, Art History, Or A Related Field. This Will Ensure That The Candidate Has A Strong Academic Foundation In Collections Management, Conservation, And Museum Operations.
