
Polymers Materials Engineer - Cell Components
The cell materials team is looking for an engineer to lead polymers and plastic materials development for the various mechanical parts in our Li-ion battery cells. This broadly includes seals/gaskets, insulators, dielectric tapes and adhesives, etc. Ownership of polymer materials and processes to meet the functional and manufacturing requirements of Tesla’s cell mechanical parts. Collaborate with our mechanical design engineers to select and validate the appropriate polymer materials for the target application & design. Implement standard tests and/or develop boutique tests to characterize unique materials requirements (e.g., electrochemical compatibility, permeability, stress-relaxation, etc.). Develop and maintain relationships with the raw material suppliers and part manufacturers in order to guide materials development for existing and future needs.
Experience with polymers as related to a part’s functionality and Design for Manufacturability
Comfortable tackling open-ended problems and developing non-standard test methods
General familiarity with Li-ion cell and electrochemistry is a plus
