- Operate locomotives in a safe and efficient manner, following all safety protocols and regulations.
- Monitor train speed, track conditions, and signals to ensure safe operation.
- Communicate effectively with train crew, dispatchers, and other personnel to coordinate train movements.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of locomotives and report any mechanical issues.
- Troubleshoot and resolve any mechanical or operational issues that may arise during a trip.
- Comply with all company policies and procedures, as well as federal and state regulations.
- Maintain accurate records of train movements, times, and delays.
- Continuously monitor and comply with train schedules and make adjustments as needed.
- Ensure the safe loading and unloading of freight and hazardous materials.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
- Foster a positive and collaborative work environment with fellow train crew members.
- Represent the company in a professional and customer-focused manner at all times.
- Adhere to strict safety protocols and procedures to prevent accidents and injuries.
- Keep up-to-date with industry developments and best practices.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.
Minimum Of High School Diploma Or Equivalent: A Locomotive Engineer Must Have A Basic Level Of Education To Understand And Follow Safety Protocols, Operate Equipment, And Interpret Technical Manuals.
Completion Of A Locomotive Engineer Training Program: Union Pacific Railroad Offers An Extensive Training Program For New Locomotive Engineers To Ensure They Are Fully Equipped With The Necessary Skills And Knowledge To Operate Trains Safely And Efficiently.
Valid Commercial Driver's License (Cdl): Locomotive Engineers Are Required To Possess A Valid Cdl With An Air Brake Endorsement, As They Are Responsible For Operating And Maneuvering Trains That Can Weigh Up To Thousands Of Tons.
Prior Experience In The Railroad Industry: While Not Always Required, Having Prior Experience In The Railroad Industry Can Be Beneficial For A Locomotive Engineer As It Provides A Deeper Understanding Of Railroad Operations And Safety Protocols.
