Job Description

  1. Perform regular inspections and maintenance of signal equipment to ensure proper functioning and compliance with safety regulations.
  2. Troubleshoot and repair any issues with signal equipment, including but not limited to signals, switches, and crossing gates.
  3. Monitor signal systems and promptly respond to any malfunctions or failures to minimize disruptions to train operations.
  4. Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repair activities, including equipment inspections and replacement of faulty components.
  5. Collaborate with other railroad personnel to coordinate signal system maintenance and repairs with train schedules.
  6. Follow all safety protocols and procedures while working on or near railroad tracks and equipment.
  7. Stay up-to-date with advancements in signal technology and make recommendations for upgrades or improvements to existing systems.
  8. Keep track of inventory and order necessary replacement parts and materials for signal system maintenance and repairs.
  9. Train and mentor new signal maintenance technicians as needed.
  10. Demonstrate a strong work ethic and dedication to the railroad industry, representing Union Pacific Railroad's values to colleagues and customers.

  • Knowledge Of Railroad Signal Systems: A Signal Maintainer Must Have A Thorough Understanding Of Railroad Signal Systems, Including Wayside, Interlocking, And Grade Crossing Signals.

  • Electrical And Mechanical Skills: The Job Requires Strong Electrical And Mechanical Skills To Troubleshoot, Repair, And Maintain Signal Equipment And Systems.

  • Safety Consciousness: Safety Is A Top Priority In The Railroad Industry, And A Signal Maintainer Must Have A Strong Commitment To Following Safety Protocols And Procedures.

  • Communication And Teamwork: Signal Maintainers Often Work In Teams And Must Be Able To Effectively Communicate With Co-Workers, Supervisors, And Other Railroad Personnel.

  • Technical Training And Certifications: Union Pacific Railroad Requires Signal Maintainers To Have A High School Diploma Or Equivalent, As Well As Technical Training In Electronics, Electricity, Or A Related Field. Certifications In Railroad Signaling Systems May Also Be Required.
