Material Development Engineer
This individual will be part of the team tasked with developing state-of-the-art steel products to keep U. S. Steel competitive in the steel industry. Laboratory based investigations will be conducted to develop new grades and to increase our knowledge of both new and existing grades. Recommendations will be made for material designs that include both steel composition and processing using existing manufacturing facilities as well as new or upgraded facilities. Develop new steel grades based on sound material design principles for the flat rolled markets to satisfy customer requirements and differentiate USS from its competition. Establish standard methods for effective use of process simulation equipment in the laboratory stages of new grade development or existing grade improvement. Improve the processing and key performance characteristics of existing products.
Knowledge of metallurgical analysis techniques, including optical microscopy and mechanical testing practices.
Good interpersonal skills to interact with other research staff, application engineers, production personnel, and customers.
Demonstrated ability to work in a team and to lead team activities.
Knowledge and experience in hot strip mill processing and microstructural development of ferrous alloys, though not requirements
